Iran will not move back of an iota.” Pointing to his nuclear obsession, said the Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. He wants to provoc, play with the nerve of the world, threaten the international peace. And with what a arguments! “People of God do not fear any power because they are commanded by Allah.” He views Israel as a “permanent threat”, denies the “historical reality of the Holocaust”. In his speech of hatred, he describes the Hebrew State as “anti-Islamic by nature”, resolves 50 million dollars to support Hamas. Will Mahmoud Ahmadinejad succeed in putting fire at the Middle East?

Let's see. I don't see much of a naval capacity there. The fact they have 18,000 sailors is nothing if they don't have their two battleships, three frigates, and three subs :-) .... The 281 combat aircraft aren't anything to sneeze at. I think how many is (20 ?) F-14s are there, left over from the Shah. Beyond that, isn't mostly old Soviet and Chinese planes? I do fear that though, because if we do go to an all out war (which I hope to avoid through the Iranian people overthrowing the government) I wonder how well our Air Force would perform. There's no doubt they'd smoke them all, but I just worry because we haven't seen air to air combat in a while. I'm sure it's nothing to worry about though, just me worrying. Haha. Anyway, how many of those soldiers would actually fight? 1980-88 Iraq-Iran War showed despite their hatred of the mullahs, ordinary citizens would die to fight against a foreign invader. Would we be perceived as a foreing invader? It be difficult in my opinion to say because part of me wants to say yes. However, considering how pro-American they are and how I've heard about a few Iranians calling into LA TV stations and asking for us to come there, I wonder...I know for a fact the two million Bassij would fight to the death. Beyond that, I don't really know...
very good comment matt, its good to see americans informed and genuinly intrested in iran. well lets see you covers lots of ground there.
* true: the islamic republics military is nothing to withstand a head on confrontation with combined US forces. But as you pointed out there be bloddshed nontheless. Most of the IRI arsenal is old soviet, pre shah, old gear, with a few exceptions, high tech russian "tor" missle defence, swedish ultra speed attack boats and small things like NV gogles. still its VERY disorganized and operate not on classic nor modern (west point style) military paradigms.
* On the dogfight issue USAF conducts daily simulated dogfight sessions and is considred the best only after Israeli Air Force. (wich also engaged in regular simulations with USAF)
* On the Iranian reaction on a invasion. REALLY hard to say it depends on how the islamic republic reatcs wich i will not go into here. But as you say (and many other experts has suggested) the Iranian peaple is the natural ally of US if treated in a right manner.
